The prostate is a small gland situated between the bladder and the penis. A tube known as the urethra runs from the bladder to the penis through the centre of the prostate, allowing urine to flow out of the body. The prostate also excretes fluid which nourishes and protects sperm when it is ejaculated through the penis. The swollen prostate presses on the urethra which impedes the flow of urine from the body, and also hiders proper ejaculation during a sexual encounter.
